Townships are changing significantly and are emerging as bustling, trendy 'new' suburbs; displaying characteristics of traditional suburban centres, but also maintaining their own unique profile and social dynamic. Development of shopping centres and overall expansion and growth in townships has not drastically impacted on informal businesses. In fact, suburban residents return weekly to give their patronage to their favourite township shebeens, hair salons and backyard mechanics, as the vibe and atmosphere specific to the township culture makes these outlets popular points of social connection; and subsequently has cultivated a distinct sense of community pride.
