Abstract

There are at least 1 600 of South Africa's finest and wealthiest people who attend the Kurland International polo event in Plettenberg Bay in December every year. They are society's prime; well-heeled and powerful. Not far from the glistening champagne, the imported fashion and the high-end art, however, is a community that quite literally epitomises how the other half lives - a community based on the other side of the highway that endures the struggle of extreme poverty.
