The year 1831 might not mean much to you, but some very exciting things indeed happened then - Victor Hugo first published The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the French Foreign legion was founded and the Great Bosnian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire broke out. In South Africa too, Cape Town was a bustling city; it was a few years before the Great Trek started, and infrastructure was on the rise. There still stands a building on Longmarket Street that is 181 years old, has seen and heard what we can only imagine, and is now home to one of Cape Town's best known eclectic restaurants.
