[This document has been captured as part of the JMID-section for Grey- literature. Grey (or gray) literature refers to informally published written material that may be difficult to trace via conventional databases and/or journals as it is not formally published or is not widely accessible. However, Grey literature may still be an important source of information. Examples of grey literature include e.g.: patents, reports, working documents or unpublished manuscripts]
The ART approach enables the provision of appropriate clinical service on primary care level in a new type of clinical settings. Such facilities require only inexpensive basic equipment and are in line with the principle of appropriate technology in health care delivery (World Health Organisation and UNICEF, 1978). The minimal costs make the provision of oral health care to underserved parts of the population more feasible. It has been shown that such services are well accepted and satisfactory for patients. However, clinical services based on the ART approach should not stand alone, but be part and parcel of oral health programmes including oral health promotion as well as preventive and curative care in communities.
