Through the ages ancient man saw himself surrounded by spiritual and supernatural beings and powers. These mysterious and miraculous forces were both benevolent and hostile. He believed that it was possible to know beforehand the intentions of these powers and to alter them by a suitable action or an appropriate word. The attempt of mankind to discern events that are distant in time or space, and that consequently cannot be perceived by normal means is usually called divination.
