In this paper I intend analysing in broad terms the two books under consideration as examples of two distinct types of theological response to the social changes of our time. The purpose I have in mind is to draw the attention to the complex relationshiv between theology and the social environment in which it is done. This is a limited purpose. I do not wish to offer a comprehensive theological critique of the theologies or the social ethics of the two authors involved, or to evaluate the Christian or religious quality of their respective books.
