The frightening magnitude of the income gap both in the world as a whole and in South Africa in particular has often been exposed. The basic facts should be known by now, although we tend conveniently to forget them. A few reminders must suffice. Per capita incomes between richest and poorest nations already differed at the rate of about 1 :45 two decades agot. Today the gap must be considerably wider.
