The more obvious effects of gravitation - the orbital motion of the planets round the Sun, and of satellites round their primaries, the effects of the earth's gravitation on bodies on its surface and even the orbital motion of double stars - are familiar to all. The gravitational origin of the tides is almost equally well known though the more detailed theory of the tides is not so familiar to many.
