Shaefer announced at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society his discovery that the long-lost star catalogue of Hipparchus, which dates back to 129 BCE, appears on a Roman statue called the Farnese Atlas. Hipparchus was one of the greatest astronomers of antiquity and his star catalogue was the fi rst in the world, as well as the most infl uential.
