Extracted from text ... mnassa vol 64 nos 5 & 6 88 A workshop to acquaint the South African astronomical community with the SALT telescope and its capabilities was held at SAAO on 19-20 March 2005. It was attended by potential users from all the institutions in the country with astronomical interests, optical or otherwise. Following a welcome address by the Director of SAAO, Prof Phil Charles, a visual tour of the facilities at Sutherland was given. A presentation on the basics of optical astronomy was given by Darragh O'Donoghue (SAAO) for astronomers from other wavelength regions.
