The report of the National Commission on Education (1993) has set new goals for the proposed 10-year basic education programme. This paper explores the implications of these goals for mathematics education. Specifically the paper argues that there is need for a broadened view of the nature of the subject which carries with it changes in the way it is taught and the role of the learner in the process. The paper also explores implications for the use of instructional materials in mathematics education.
