In 1992 the President of Botswana established a National Commission on Education which undertook a comprehensive review of the country's education system. The Commission submitted its Report in 1993. On the basis of the Government's response to the Report, the National Assembly in 1994 approved The Revised National Policy on Education. In this article, Frank Youngman, a member of the Commission from the University of Botswana, interviews lakes Swartland, the Co-ordinator of the Revised National Policy on Education in the Ministry of Education in the period 1995-2000. The article discusses the experience of implementing the policy in the period 1994-1999 from the perspective of the Government official primarily responsible. Through the consideration of this experience, it provides insights into issues in the implementation of educational reform.

The study investigated employment opportunities, competencies required and training needs in home economics related businesses in Botswana. The sample comprised managers, supervisors, and operators working in food service, clothing manufacturing and textile production. Structured questionnaires were administered to subjects to collect data on competencies required, employment by gender and their training needs. Results indicate that home economics related businesses offered a variety of employment opportunities to men and women in Botswana. In the businesses covered in the study, most employees were trained on the job and it is suggested that training is needed in basic production skills, communication and human relations skills. This creates a need for home economics education programmes to prepare individuals for this viable job market. As part of the ongoing curricula reform in Botswana, home economics curricula at various levels of education should be designed to prepare both men and women for entry into home economics related businesses.

Using a national sample of 325, this study investigates the extent of nurses' involvement in antenatal health education and explores variables that may be associated with their involvement. The study documents the importance of midwifery training and a nurse's own childbirth experience in promoting involvement in antenatal health education. It points to the relative unimportance of academic qualifications for nurses involved in antenatal health education. Findings show that work-related factors such as satisfaction with workstation, workload, and staff shortages were associated with nurses' involvement. Resources related factors such as adequacy of equipment, adequacy of telecommunication and transport facilities were also associated with nurses' involvement. Membership of a community organisation was also found to have an impact on involvement in antenatal health education. Individual background factors such as age, level of income religious affiliation, nurses' overall health, and marital status did not have a significant impact on nurses' involvement in antenatal health education activities.
