Abstract

In this quantitative study the reading preferences and behaviour of Afrikaans-speaking children in South Africa were investigated. The study, funded by prominent publishers of Afrikaans children's books, paints a disturbing picture of the respondents' attitude towards reading, the availability of books and the extent of external reading motivation. It also provides valuable information about the reading preferences of the research group with regard to the use of language, the choice genres and specific text features.
