Abstract

Bacterial meningitis is a potentially life-threatening inflammation of the mem-branes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by several different types of bacteria; in children outside the newborn period, the three most common are type b, and . Bacterial meningitis can result in hearing loss, intellectual deficits, balance disturbances and paralysis, and is a significant cause of illness and death in children.
