Rhinitis is common, affecting nearly everyone at one time or another. It may be defined as the occurrence of annoying nasal symptoms including discharge, itching, sneezing, congestion and pressure. Rhinitis can be classified into three basic categories, based on its cause:

  • Allergic rhinitis - caused by allergy to e.g. pollen, animal dander, house dust mites etc.
  • Non-allergic rhinitis - caused by e.g. tobacco smoke, strong fragrances, changes in temperature etc.
  • Infectious rhinitis - usually caused by viral infection
