oa Professional Nursing Today - A terminal disease amongst nurses - learned helplessness : editorial

There is a really sad condition that has reached epidemic proportions among our nurse leaders. It is a slow developing illness and you hardly notice you have it - until one day when you need to take action on a key project or on donor funding and you just can't. It just seems impossible to deal with all those people who have power. They are not you and you'd rather not rock the boat. It is sapping our profession of autonomy and we are unwittingly passing it on to future generations just by failing to act, by sitting by passively, by not being in charge of our own destiny. Especially when we have the money and power to do so.
