Abstract

Breastfeeding is the best choice for all infants. Breastmilk provides infants with all nutrients essential for their optimal physical and mental development, and simultaneously activates and reinforces their immune system. This is especially important for infants exposed to suboptimal hygienic conditions, who are more prone to gastrointestinal infections and acute diarrhoea. Diarrhoea is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among infants in developing countries, especially those under the age of 5 years. Such diarrhoea is often associated with poor hygienic conditions and subsequent contamination of made-up infant feeds with potential enterobacterial pathogens. It is critical to ensure measures are in place to minimise contamination of formula from potential enteropathogens.
