This stress is compounded, as many hospitals do not have clear guidelines regarding administration of blood products or the monitoring of patients receiving massive transfusions. The nurse plays a critical role in the management of a massive transfusion, both directly related to the transfusion and also in coordinating the administration of the blood products and the identification of the complications of a massive transfusion.
