Abstract

Pneumococcal disease is caused by infection with , also known as pneumococcus, a Gram-positive, encapsulated, lancet-shaped, coccus bacterial cell, usually occurring in pairs (diplococci). Based on differences in the composition of the capsule, there are more than 90 different seroptypes of pneumococci.
