oa Professional Nursing Today - The Vaccine and Cervical Cancer Screen project : experiences from a primary school-based vaccine implementation studying Gauteng and the Western Cape, South Africa

Abstract

Cervical cancer remains a highly prevalent and lethal disease in South Africa. Although the national Department of Health runs a formal cervical cancer screening programme, it has not been fully implemented and therefore screening is limited and opportunistic, resulting in some populations being over- and others under-screened. Unfortunately, it is usually the most destitute populations who are not screened. It is unlikely that formal population-based screening will be fully implemented in South Africa in the foreseeable future as this has not been achieved in any other developing country or low-resource setting. Therefore, there is a need to investigate alternative options with regard to cervical cancer prevention.
