oa Professional Nursing Today - What are your perceptions of infant pain? : clinical

Abstract

Infants cannot specifically express their feelings with painful experiences and they respond similarly to pain, fear and distress as they do to non-painful conditions (hunger, thirst etc.). This doesn't mean they experience less pain, even if they respond slower to painful stimuli. In fact, it is widely believed that infants feel pain more readily and that their perception of pain is more profound than in older persons.
