ID and IDA are the most common nutritional deficiency anaemias in the world and develop when an individual's iron requirements and loss exceed the intake. Vulnerable target groups who have obvious causes for IDA can be directly treated with oral iron. Individuals without an obvious cause first need thorough investigations.
