oa Professional Nursing Today - Burns - diagnosis and first aid : wound care

Abstract

The aim of this article is to aid in the diagnosis of burns and also to act as a guide to the initial management of a burn. Before one administers first aid, the location, severity and cause of the burn must be assessed and evaluated. The burn must then be treated accordingly. However, if in doubt, treat the burn as a severe or major burn, especially if the cause is unknown. First aid administered within the first 20 minutes can be life saving and prevent major complications.
