oa SA Pharmacist's Assistant - Urinary tract infections in the elderly : family focus
The kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra all work together to rid the body of waste products and extra fluids in the form of urine. Unfortunately, all parts of the urological system can become infected. Infections are usually caused by bacteria (e.g. Escherichia coli), present around the rectal area. Infections also occur more often in women than in men because of a shorter urethra, making it easier for the bacteria to enter into the body.
