Abstract

External otitis media, or swimmer's ear, is an infection of the skin of the outer ear and ear canal. The ear canal extends from the external opening of the ear to the ear drum. The function of the ear canal is to protect the ear from infection and foreign objects. It produces ear wax (cerumen) to trap debris entering the ear and has an acidic pH to deter bacterial growth.
