Abstract

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestines. Usually, it is caused by infection from viruses, bacteria or parasites. The most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in young children is a rotavirus infection. Adults may be infected after close contact with an infected infant, but generally, the illness in adults is mild.
