Rhinitis is defined as inflammation of the inner lining of the nose. Allergic rhinitis occurs as a result of an inflammatory response to tiny airborne particles called allergens. The allergic reaction results in activation of two types of inflammatory cells; mast cells and basophils. These cells produce inflammatory substances, such as histamine and leukotrienes, which cause fluid build-up in the nasal cavity, irritation, sneezing and a runny nose.
