Over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers are among the most widely used medications in the world that can be bought without a prescription from the doctor. OTC pain relievers include paracetamol, aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The choice of analgesic should be based on the type and duration of pain, and the likely benefits and risks. Most analgesics are effective for nociceptive pain which is pain due to ordinary tissue injury. They are less effective for neuropathic pain due to damage to or dysfunction of the nerves, spinal cord or brain, for which different medicines are often required.
