Conjunctivitis can be divided into various types according to the causative agents. The three most important types of conjunctivitis are bacterial, viral and allergic. With all three of these types, the eyes may appear red and feel itchy but it is possible to differentiate between the various types by identifying other symptoms that may be specific to each. It is important to be able to identify between the various types of conjunctivitis so that a correct diagnosis can be made and the proper treatment initiated, as well as referring the patient to a doctor when necessary.
