The consumption of alcoholic drinks has been a feature of human society for thousands of years. It is associated with religious ceremonies as well as with feasts, festivals and good times. While the majority of people who drink alcoholic beverages do not experience drinking-related problems or become alcoholics, alcohol directly or indirectly is a major cause of illness and death. After tobacco, alcohol consumption causes more morbidity and mortality than any other drug. Furthermore, twice as many people are addicted to alcohol as to all other drugs put together, including prescription drugs.
