Industry News Yeast-based probiotics (Saccharomyces boulardii) have proved their effectiveness in dramatically reducing deaths associated with diarrhoea in children under 5 years of age. This follows studies conducted amongst children with diarrhoea where the death toll dropped from 4.6 million children in 1980 to 1.8 million in 2000. Whilst the causes of diarrhoea differed amongst the children tested, the consequences remained the same, i.e. loss of water and electrolytes and abnormal gastrointestinal flora.
