Although many bacteria live on the skin, the skin is usually an effective barrier against bacterial infection. However, any break in the skin or skin that is damaged by sunburn, scratching, insect bites or other irritation, may result in a skin infection. Some people are more at risk of skin infections e.g. those with diabetes mellitus as blood flow, especially to the hands and feet, may be poor.
