The incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide, including in developing countries such as South Africa, due to population growth, ageing, urbanisation and the increasing prevalence of obesity and physical inactivity. In 1998, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that globally there were 135 million people with diabetes. This estimate has been projected to increase to 366 million in 2030.
