The pharmacist's assistant plays an important role in assisting patients in the selection of the most appropriate medication for a runny nose caused by a viral infection. It is important to check the composition of the recommended products to ensure that patients do not 'double-up' on the same or similar medicines. Also, to help reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance, it is helpful to educate patients that not every runny nose is caused by a bacterial infection and therefore not every sniffle needs antibiotic treatment.
