oa SA Pharmacist's Assistant - Indigestion & dyspepsia : OTC products

Abstract

Indigestion is frequently self-diagnosed by patients presenting in the pharmacy seeking relief for pain in the chest, upper abdomen or lower abdomen. Indigestion, however, is an imprecise term used by patients to cover a wide range of digestive tract problems. Many patients also use the term indigestion and heartburn interchangeably. It is therefore up to the pharmacist and the pharmacist's assistant to establish whether the self-diagnosis is correct and to exclude the possibility of serious disease, referring patients appropriately for further medical attention.
