A heart attack occurs when a blockage in a coronary artery severely restricts or cuts off blood supply to a region of the heart. If the blood supply is cut off for more than a few minutes, the heart tissue may die. Since each coronary artery supplies a specific section of the heart, the location of the damage or 'infarct' is determined by which coronary artery is blocked. A blood clot is the most common cause of a blocked coronary artery.
