Depression is an illness that has a profound impact on family members, especially those who live with the person suffering from the depression. This psychiatric disorder is very common and can take many shapes and forms. Some depressed people show subtle signs and symptoms a long time before they might be diagnosed and treated and this early phase can be particularly hard on everyone in the family. Some people may become irritable and moody and have angry, eruptive outbursts. Some may suffer from feelings of sadness or emptiness, loss of interest in activities with symptoms including changes in eating habits, weight gain or loss, changes in sleep or activity patterns, decreased energy and difficulty concentrating or making decisions. Some may even suffer from unexplained physical symptoms such as back pain, digestive problems or headaches that could indicate that the person is suffering from depression
