In 2007, approximately 1.7 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa were newly infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and according to data published by the Department of Health, the national HIV prevalence is 28%. Although this indicates a decrease in prevalence of 2.2% compared to 2005, HIV is still a significant problem in South Africa. Health care workers, including pharmacists who deal with patients who are infectious, are often exposed to situations that may lead to the transmission of HIV. The general population may also find themselves drawn into this predicament due to violence and ineffective preventative health care strategies, thus it is imperative that pharmacists have an understanding of the modes of transmission, risk factors and the appropriate use of prophylactic agents once an individual has been exposed.
