The previous article dealt with the differences between management and leadership, and explored the qualities of effective leaders. A leader's primary responsibility is to develop people to enable them to reach their full potential. The most effective managers are widely recognised as those who get the most out of their teams, and who spend a high percentage of their time and energy developing others. A leader must always view mentoring and coaching from two perspectives. Firstly, to mentor or coach and lead others, and secondly being mentored or coached him- or herself to achieve selfimprovement. In this article, the focus is on the role of a leader as a mentor and coach.
