An adult needs approximately 8 hours sleep a day. Some people, however, require as little as 3 hours sleep a day. Sleep requirements tend to decrease with increasing age. Insomnia is a common clinical problem with a broad range of consequences, comorbidities and risks. Every person at some point will experience insomnia. For most people the problem will be of nuisance value only affecting next-day alertness. Disordered sleep can, however, cause emotional disturbance, memory difficulties, reduced concentration, increased medicine use or substance abuse, poor motor skills, decreased work efficiency and an increased risk of traffic accidents.
