oa SA Pharmaceutical Journal - National Guidelines at a glance : Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease : review

Abstract

In 2004 the COPD Working Group of the South African Thoracic Society published the latest revision of the South African Guideline for the Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This revision was based on new insights into both treatment approaches and the impact of COPD in South Africa. The COPD Working Group paid particular attention to the development of recommendations that would be cost-effective in the South African context. This 2004 version is now under revision, and a 2009 version will be available during the course of the year.

COPD, an important cause of death and disability in the developed and the developing world, is becoming more common, accounting for a significant increase in utilisation of heath care resources. This Guideline was developed with the specific objective of improving COPD patient care across all sectors of the health care system, by providing a stepped management action plan for the recognition and treatment of this disease.
