oa SA Pharmaceutical Journal - Prevention and treatment of pneumococcal disease : review

Abstract

Pneumococcal disease has a worldwide annual mortality rate of around 1.6 million people. Infection with may result in invasive pneumococcal diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, bacteraemia as well as acute otitis media. The burden of pneumococcal disease in developing countries and increasing resistance to antibiotics is a reminder that prevention of pneumococcal disease through vaccination is becoming increasingly important in our largely overcrowded communities, especially those with a high incidence of malnutrition.
