Abstract

The most important concern in the management of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) is antibiotic resistance. Worldwide evidence suggests that inappropriate antibiotic use for non-severe URTIs, most of which are viral, adds to the overall burden of antibiotic resistance, a phenomenon which is becoming more prevalent. This has been the rationale for the compilation of treatment guidelines for the management of URTIs in South Africa.
