oa SA Pharmaceutical Journal - Drug-induced osteoporosis : review

Abstract

Osteoporosis remains a largely silent and under-diagnosed disease. As few as one in five women with an osteoporotic fracture may receive treatment. It is defined as a reduction in the strength of bone via low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration leading to an increased risk of fractures. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines osteoporosis as a bone density falling 2.5 standard deviations below the mean for a young healthy adult of the same gender.
