Increasing access to and use of effective contraception is essential to preventing unintended pregnancy, especially among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive women. The prevention of unintended pregnancies is not only a global public health priority, but also a critical and cost-effective approach to primary prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

HIV-infected women have the same reproductive rights as HIV-uninfected women, but based on their HIV status, may require additional care and counselling. This review highlights the different contraceptive options that are available to HIV-positive women in South Africa, provides local and international recommendations, and outlines the reproductive rights of women affected by HIV.
