oa SA Pharmaceutical Journal - National guidelines at a glance : asthma : review
Guidelines for the management of chronic, persistent asthma were first published by the South African Thoracic Society in 1992. Revisions were made in 2000, and again in 2007. This latest guideline was developed as an attempt to define and achieve control of asthma in response to the revised classification and new evidence on the safety and optimal use of asthma medications, and the ongoing need to emphasise the central treatment role of anti-inflammatory medication and leukotriene modifiers. Since surveys show that the majority of patients do not receive optimal care and are, therefore, not well controlled, these guidelines were formulated to encourage uniformity in the management of asthma.
