oa SA Pharmaceutical Journal - Macrolides and ketolides : more than just antimicrobials : review

Abstract

Macrolide antimicrobials have a spectrum of activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens and have often been used as an alternative to treat patients allergic to penicillin. In addition to their widespread use as antimicrobials, they also possess nonmicrobial properties that may contribute positively towards patient health. This is seen especially with their immunomodulatory effects, where the addition of a macrolide to the treatment regimen for severe community-acquired pneumonia may significantly decrease the risk of death. This article will review the properties of macrolides, with reference to the latest medical developments.
