oa SA Pharmaceutical Journal - Nausea and vomiting : an approach for the pharmacist : review

Abstract

Nausea and vomiting are common complaints and many patients may approach the pharmacist for assistance in relieving these symptoms. Although the exact cause of nausea and vomiting is not always known, an understanding of the pathophysiology of nausea can help the pharmacist to select appropriate and cost-effective therapy. Careful history taking is an important aspect of management. This article provides an overview of the causes of nausea and vomiting, the management and treatment of patients presenting with nausea and vomiting in the community pharmacy setting and the referral of patients with more serious conditions.
