oa SA Pharmaceutical Journal - An approach to heartburn and hiatus hernia : review

Abstract

The general view regarding the role of the hiatus hernia in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) has changed in recent decades. Initially, it was thought to be synonymous with GORD, but this view changed during the 1970s and 1980s, when it was thought to be more of an incidental finding. Today, the pathogenesis of GORD is understood to be multifactorial. Hiatus hernia is recognised as being an important aetiological factor in patients with more severe GORD. This article discusses the different types and causes of hiatus hernias, reviews the ways in which hiatus hernias may aggravate GORD, and discusses possible treatment options.
