Traditionally, the beginning of February is the time when new students register for the first year of the BPharm programme.This year, all institutions offering the BPharm have enrolled the maximum capacity of first-year students. On the surface, this would appear to be a good scenario for pharmacy in South Africa as the number of graduates should increase. However, according to the South African Pharmacy Council's 2011 report, Pharmacy human resources in South Africa, in order for South Africa to reach the World Health Organization (WHO) target of pharmacist to population ratio of 1:2 300, "pharmacy schools would need to double their current production and three additional pharmacy schools would need to be operational by 2014".
